" ,,, wait on the wind,
catch a scent of salt,
call it our life."
- Philip Levine, " Our Valley "
Climbing out on the coastal rocks, far enough to separate shoreline from sea, I arrived at this position at just the decisive time when waves were exploding over my head, hurling a sea spray high in the air, which momentarily became threads of light. The continuous unrolling and explosion of waves held me breathless as I worked, getting soaking wet with each new collision of wave and stone. I continued to photograph, wave after wave, desperately trying to capture the one exposure which would unite surf, rocky shoreline and backlit sea spray. I wanted the frame which depicted a feeling of the aliveness and the sense of renewal possible to experience when light both penetrates and reflects the sea in motion.
