The Canyon is twenty miles long, and at certain points 4,000-feet wide and 1,200-feet deep. This view is from the South Rim Trail. In 1869 explorer Charles Cook was credited with being the first white man to see the canyon. As he came upon the edge he was said to have commented: ' I sat there in amazement, while my companions came up, and after that, it seemed to me that it was five minutes before anyone spoke. "
